Microsoft Terminates Cortana App for iOS and Android

Microsoft today discontinued its Cortana AI service for mobile devices. The company has ended all support for third-party Cortana service and terminated Cortana app for iOS and Android devices.

However, users who are unfamiliar with Cortana, it is the AI Assistant service like Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa offered by Microsoft. The AI-based personal assistant that can respond to questions and carry out minor tasks.

Cortana mobile app was officially launched in November 2018, but barely 3 years since its launch, the application never gained enough user base high enough for Microsoft to consider it worth maintaining and preserving on like its competitor Google Assistant Owned by Google, Siri Owned by Apple And Alexa owned by Amazon.

The Microsoft support page, explained in details that starting today, March 31 20201, the Cortana mobile app will no longer be supported on mobile devices, furthermore, reminders and lists will no longer be available within the app either.

The company said in addition that the previously stored reminders and history can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows as Cortana reminders, lists, and tasks are automatically synced to the Microsoft To Do app, which is available as a free download on iOS and Android.

This notice was previously announced around July 2020, when Microsoft stated that it would be shifting towards a much more “transformational AI-powered assistant experience” in its Microsoft 365 apps, which would involve refocusing its “areas of innovation and development.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft has ever since been improving Cortana’s integration into Microsoft 365, such that is has already introduced personalized, actionable briefs in Outlook for Exchange users, and adding Cortana to the Teams mobile app to do things like manage calendars, email, and join meetings.

In the month of January 2021, the company ended support for the Cortana integration in the Harman Kardon Invoke speaker, and instead integrated a Bluetooth-enabled device transition plan for Invoke users in order to enable invoke owners continue listening to their favorite music, podcasts, and radio stations.

In addition, all Speaker owners who used Cortana are also eligible for a $50 Microsoft gift card, which is redeemable up to July 31, 2021.
